With landslide votes in the both the House and Senate, the US Congress passed an amendment banning horse slaughter in the US for one fiscal year. Bi-partisan support of this amendment was underscored by a massive outpouring of letters, phone calls, and emails from American citizens urging the Congress to end this abhorrent industry. Yet despite the clear message that both US citizens and Federal lawmakers have sent, the USDA is considering a proposal from European owned slaughter facilities to skirt this new law.
