The US Forest Service (FS) has decided that the Salt River Wild Horses are “estray” livestock and a danger to the public. An injunction is being filed today by the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group.
The U.S. Forest Service is planning to remove about 100 wild horses from their home range where they have lived since at least the1800s and have co-existed peacefully with the local community and active recreation activities. The horses have been an attraction, treasured and enjoyed by all who see them.
The Salt River Herd is unique, most likely tracing back to early Colonial Spanish horses and have survived there for more than 100 years, adapting to the unique environment there.
Just across the river the herd who live on the Pima-Maricopa Tribal lands are being managed with birth control (native PZP) by the tribe.
A local group, The Salt River Wild Horse Management Group, has offered to manage the horses with the contraception and has been actively involved in creating an identification database and monitoring the herd.
Please help by signing and SHARING the petition!
You can also reach out to the Forest Service representatitives listed below, and urge them to:
- Stop all plans to remove the Salt River Wild Horse Herd and encourage the proud protection of this unique Heritage Herd!
“This herd has intrinsic historical value and add to the local tourism as a Heritage Herd.”
- Work with local groups to manage the horses on the range:
“Local qualified advocates are willing and able to provide monitoring, birth control and other support to manage the horses on the range instead of wasting tax dollars in capturing and removing the horses where they would suffer needlessly and most likely be sold for slaughter.”
