Today, Friday, December 18th was the anniversary of  the signing of the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act,  by President Richard Nixon in 1971.

With the holidays upon us, we want to thank you for all you have done and continue to do to support the lifesaving work Return to Freedom does.

When you support Return to Freedom you support a proven innovative organization who, since 1998,  has produced results and inspired a new approach for wild horse conservation and preservation. We could not do that without you!

Since 1998, Return to Freedom has been a leading voice for America’s wild horses and burros and their challenge to survive on America’s state and federal lands.

Although there is still much to do for the wild horses fighting for their lives and their freedom, things are moving in the direction we have all worked so hard for.

Return to Freedom Wild Horse Sanctuary, 2015

Thanks to your support~Return Freedom operates a premier wild horse and burro sanctuary providing hands on daily care and refuge to 350 wild horses and 45 burros. In addition to the equines that call the sanctuary their home,  RTF collaborates with other organizations, individuals and agencies, saving the lives of more than 1200 wild horse over the past 17 years.

Thanks to your support~ RTF provides experiential programs for youth and adults, both at sanctuary locations and on the range. RTF has resumed programs for on the range herd observation, documentation, and investigation.

Thanks to your support~RTF actively advocates for viable solutions to keep wild horses and burros on their natural rangelands, founded a national coalition of 50 organizations nationwide, founded, steered, and sponsored the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign which now operates independently.

Thanks to your support~ RTF selectively litigates to challenge agency decisions that unfairly impact wild horses and burros.

RTF’s proposal for ‘In The Wild Minimally Intrusive Management Solutions’ explored through our sanctuary model and proposed to federal agencies since 1999 are now being implemented through various public/private partnerships.

With your continued support, Return to Freedom is in discussions to launch a new pilot program on the range in 2016, and establish the Wild Horse and Burro Wilderness Preserve and Discovery Center to secure our long term sustainability.

Beaty Butte Roundup, November 2015

Beaty Butte Roundup, November 2015

I shiver to think what this season will be like for the foals that have just been captured in the tragic roundup I just witnessed at the Beatty Butte Herd Management Area in Oregon. Huddled in holding pens without shelter from trees, brush or valleys.

I stood watching in horror as family after family ran for their lives…running for the last time in the only home they have ever known straight into a trap, their bonds and freedom lost forever.

Most of the horses at Return to Freedom have endured similar capture and each tells the story of thousands who remain the nameless and faceless victims of the battle being fought on our rangelands over grazing rights and the distribution of natural resources there.

But this holiday season we can celebrate a happy story. This holiday is particularly joyous for us because we will be able to reunite Galahad with his beloved mare Hope who he fought valiantly to protect with their colt Sterling. And, the benevolent white stallion Silver King, who has been by Galahad’s side since their tragic roundup, will also reunite with several of his otherwise lost mares.

Thank you for being a crucial part of these reunions. Only with your help, can Return to Freedom continue giving safe refuge to family and bonded horses and burros at the sanctuary, and to heal all the wounds that we can while we continue to work on improving policies that will protect America’s wild horses and burros on their rightful home on the range.

Return to Freedom is also home to 45 burros! This summer the drought has wreaked havoc on wildlife everywhere. RTF welcomed 15 burros who had wandered off their range at the Black Mountain Herd Management Area in Arizona looking for food and water. With 3 additional baby burros being born once they arrived, this herd is now 18!
