Our Mission
Return to Freedom is dedicated to preserving the freedom, diversity and habitat of America’s wild horses through sanctuary, education, advocacy and conservation, while enriching the human spirit through direct connection with the natural world.
Our focus is to meet the immediate needs of rescue and sanctuary for wild horses and burros as we work on solutions to preserve them in viable free ranging herds for future generations.
Return to Freedom pioneers innovative alternatives to standard wild horse management and experiential programs that can be applied on the range –and – advocates for viable solutions to prevent the removal of wild horses from their natural rangelands.
In 1998 Return to Freedom created The American Wild Horse Sanctuary as a model to:
- Explore minimally invasive management solutions for wild horses that could be applied on the range.
- Educate the public through experiencing horses living in natural herds and learn directly from the horses about horses.
- Create value through understanding and inspire respect for the natural world through sensitive observation which drives educated advocacy for policy reforms
- Support national education and advocacy for wild horse preservation on their natural rangelands through minimally invasive management solutions.
Return to Freedom’s American Wild Horse Sanctuary was created as a model to explore viable solutions for wild horse management that could be applied on the range. On the range management will help eliminate the catastrophic and senseless capture and removal management policy that has systematically eradicated hundreds of thousands of wild horses for over 40 years.
